Love Actually (2003)

If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually… is… one of the best Christmas films ever made.

It’s British, it has one of the greatest casts ever assembled, and it has more poignancy in a few seconds than most have in their entirety. It was written and directed by Richard Curtis (About Time), though, so I’m not surprised.

Starring Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Andrew Lincoln, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laura Linney, Bill Nighy, and others (see what I mean?), Love Actually revolves around interwoven lives in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Some stories are about success, some are about sex, but all of them are in some way about love, be it hopeful or tragic, and they’re all connected.

To talk about all the plot lines would take a while, so let me just say there is something for everyone. It’s the rare kind of movie where I scream at certain characters or cry at the mere thought of what they’ll be doing soon. Yes, it spawned a million inferior copycats, but that’s because it works so magically here.

If you haven’t seen it, please do. If you have, well, the odds are you’ll be watching it at least once before Christmas.

Let me know your favorite storyline in the comments below.
